The fine weather was reflected in the football at Awakeri on the weekend, with both Plains Rangers teams at home.
On Saturday, SLH Contracting Plains Rangers men hosted Opotiki in BOP division two. After an even start to the game, Rangers used some nice passing moves to put pressure on their visitors. After quarter of an hour, right winger Petir Gray forced a Rangers corner. Captain James Hart swung over a great ball and Jordan Ogilvy volleyed the ball superbly into the goal. With confidence levels up, Rangers played some flowing football. After half an hour, another corner had young striker Jamaal James heading it onto the post. Shortly afterwards, yet another corner brought Rangers second goal, with a strong header from centre back Mike Johnstone.
The second half continued with Rangers playing well; good work from Jamaal James and Samuel Christieson set up Petir Gray for a calm finish.
Late in the game, Aaron Muggeridge came on and put the icing on the cake, slipping the ball under the advancing keeper after he was put through the Opotiki defence. The final score: Plains Rangers 4, Opotiki 0.
Rangers will be pleased with the result and even more pleased with the quality of football played. Jordan Ogilvy was named player of the day, with Matt Orr-McKeown and Ronnie Potter also in top form. The game was played in excellent spirit by both teams and was well refereed by Norm Howe.
This Saturday, Rangers men have an early kick off at Ngongotaha.
On Sunday, Plains Rangers women were at home to Rotorua United White. The visitors had the better of the first half, but resolute defence kept them at bay. Rangers came into the game more in the second half, with some nice attacking moves and a number of shots on goal. Rotorua also created chances but were denied, resulting in a point apiece nil all draw. Player of the day Sarah Boyce read the game well in centre defence, alongside the determined Ranee Whiting. Others tom impress included keeper Tracey Pullar, who made a couple of brave saves, Jo Ingle and Holly Klinac.
This Sunday Rangers women are away to Papamoa.
